How do you work a safe cat collar?

We just adopted a cat from another family who had a safe cat collar on him, and I can't work it. I'm trying to open it so we can put information tags on him and take of his old ones. I've tried pushing and pinching it different ways, but I can't get it. Help please!

Find the place where the two plastic parts lock. Turn the plastic over. Insert a small flat screwdriver blade (or similar) into the hole and gently pry. The spring-loaded lock will come out of the other plastic part to unlock the collar. This is safer than just forcibly pulling the two pieces apart to avoid jaring the cat's neck on release.
