I have 2 5 year old cats, and will be moving in with a roommate who has a dog. I'm thinking about getting a self cleaning litter box, but have never used one before and I'm worried that my cats might be scared to use it. Do you recommend purchasing the self cleaning box for adult cats who are not used to them?
I have 3 cats, one more than 8 years old, 2 who were feral when I caught them and brought them in. I added self-cleaning litterboxes just before Christmas last year..... had not a bit of problem with the cats adjusting to them. I put one out and left a regular box out as well initially.... the cats just immediately started using the self-scooping box, because it was the cleaner of the 2 within a day. In fact one of the 2 that were feral is absolutely fascinated by the boxes.... when he hears the motor he runs through the apartment to watch it do it's thing.... it's pretty funny. And I seem to be using less litter with them as well.... apparently the scooping more often is leading to smaller clumps and it's using less litter... not something I'd expected to have happen, but I'm certainly not objecting.
They do make for less work for the human. I bought the Smart Scoop, and while it's not perfect... the sides are too low for my scatterer cat and my big guy tends to hang his butt over the side.... even with those issues it's STILL less work than having to manually scoop the box a couple of times a day. So I"m glad I made the purchase.
