"Spot On" Flea & Tick Control for dogs. Safe?

OK, all retailers (on-line and large stores) sell this stuff. It is 1/5 the cost of other flea control products, and yes it claims to kill ticks, mosquitoes, EVERYTHING! Yeah, I guess because the active ingredient (Permethrin) KILLS everything. OK, Farnam is a respected seller of ag products (I use their stuff on cows, horses, etc.) But what are the controversies with this dog product? Safe or Not?
