If biohazard waste (like used needles) have to go into the red boxes because they contain blood...?
Why don't they treat the used-napkin receptacles in the girls' bathroom stalls the same way? They also contain blood biohazards!
But even paramedics wear rubber gloves in case they come into physical contact with blood that's just lying on the patient's body surface, when it can't be injected. So I was just wondering why there isn't as much hemophobia in menstrual waste containers.
Paramedics wear gloves for two reasons--
1. Protect the patient from anything contaminated they have on their hands...and if the patient has blood on the body surface, there must be a wound somewhere. If there is an opening, then there is a way the paramedics germs can enter into the body of the patient.
2. Protect themselves from any contamination from the patient. The disposable rubber gloves they uses are not perfect at this (there are pinprick holes) but if they have an open area on their hands, it is far better to have protection.
Like paramedics, nurses are constantly in contact with bodily fluids. The difference is that nurses can wash their hands before and after any contact much more easily than a paramedic in an ambulance.
Menstrual waste actually has only a very small amount of blood (despite how it looks). These containers usually have liners and cleaners do not have to reach in and fish the pads out. If they do, they should be given gloves.
If for instance, the waste container is right next to you and it is crammed full of used items, the germs/viruses cannot jump from the pads etc and onto you. You must first have contact and then a wound on your hands for any virus to enter.
